Tell your state Senator to vote NO to more Billboards!

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

SB437 seeks to force cities that have chosen to restrict or forbid unsightly billboards to allow the reconstruction of those destroyed by natural disasters. This bill is before the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs on Tues, March 24 at 11 a.m

Background

Several municipalities throughout Alabama believe that billboards and advertising signs do not have a place amongst the beautiful natural landscape of Alabama the Beautiful.

We agree with them.

If passed, SB437 would strip some of these cities of their rights to forbid the reconstruction of non-conforming billboards after they are destroyed by natural causes or disasters. The legislation specifically targets a heavily-traveled strech of highway from I-20 - I-10.

When visitors pass through our state, we want them to remember the beauty of our natural resources, not the number of unsightly advertisements and billboards on the side of the road.

This bill has been introduced in different forms since 2006. Help us to once again STOP this legislation from moving along any further in the Alabama legislature.

Vote NO on SB437

Dear Senator,

I'm writing today to ask you to vote NO to SB437 at the March 24, 2009 meeting of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee.

Several cities and municipalities throughout our state have chosen to restrict billboards, because they believe it is best for their respective areas. Under these restrictions, those billboards that do not conform may not be rebuilt after they are destroyed by natural disasters.

SB437 would change that for a certain geographic area spanning from a heavily traveled section of highway from I-20 to I-10. City leaders would be told that they must allow unsightly billboards and advertising signs to be rebuilt after they are destroyed.

When visitors travel through our state via this stretch of highway, they should leave with the memory of Alabama the Beautiful's natural resources and landscapes, rather than our numerous billboards and advertisements.

Please vote NO on SB437 this Tuesday, March 24 to help protect both the rights of our city leaders and the beauty of our state.

Sincerely,

Your name and address here
